CLEGG HAMMER

The CLEGG HAMMER or Soil Impact Tester measures the hardness of a surface to ensure quality of play and reduce the risk of injury, particularly on football and rugby fields. It was designed by PROLEXIA in partnership with LABOSPORT.

The hammer measures the hardness or impact absorption of various surfaces, including sports surfaces. The device consists of a hammer that slides down a guide tube and is dropped from a fixed height to strike the tested surface. The impact is then measured by a precise accelerometer located inside the hammer, providing an indication of the surface’s hardness.

Evaluating the hardness of a sports surface is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Athlete safety: A surface that is too hard can increase the risk of injuries, such as joint damage, concussions, or other impact-related injuries. Conversely, a surface that is too soft can also lead to injuries due to lack of support or stability.
  2. Performance optimization: The hardness of a sports surface can have a significant impact on athlete performance. Surfaces that are too hard or too soft can negatively affect speed, agility, and ball bounce, making it difficult for athletes to perform at their best.
  3. Compliance with regulations: Many sports have specific guidelines and regulations regarding the hardness of their playing surfaces issued by federations or governments. Regular evaluations ensure that facilities meet these requirements and maintain consistent conditions for athletes.
  4. Maintenance and longevity: Regular monitoring of the hardness of a sports surface can help identify when maintenance or repairs are needed, thus extending the lifespan of the surface and ensuring optimal performance over time.

Several sports require the use of the Clegg hammer for surface hardness evaluations, including soccer, rugby, American football, field hockey, grass tennis, cricket, gymnastics, racetracks, and even children's playgrounds
